Difference Maker
Most of us want to live in a world where kindness matters. We want to see this world filled with love and joy. We want to see compassion flow from our hearts that makes a change in the causes we believe in. The darkness is so evident in our world right now. The division, the hurt, and the anger seems to be an ever-consuming fire. Most of us talk about the change we want to see, but the way that we are trying to evoke change is through hatred and spite instead of understanding and compassion. Our motives behind wanting change are selfish. We might have a hard time admitting it to ourselves, because I know I certainly do, but we are prideful people. We have a constant need to be right, but that’s just it. There is no right or wrong side. So, why do we feel the need to argue?
We live in an incredibly sensitive culture. We hate hearing the opinions and values of other people that disagree with our own. We do not like our flaws pointed out or our weak points. We want to hear the things that make our hearts happy and give us butterflies in our stomachs. We live in a culture where I am always a princess and never the villain. When I am that princess, I am stuck up, everyone else around is to blame for my life circumstances, and there is no place for me to take responsibility for myself. I do not like to talk about my shortcomings and my flaws, because Lord knows I have a lot, but when they are pointed out it forces me to be better. If we want to see a change in our culture, we need to create a space for constructive conversation where we can tend to the beliefs of others we may not agree with, because no one will agree on everything 100% of the time and that is okay.
This is not a post about calling people out. It is about how if we want to see a change collectively then we need to start being okay with living in the gray. Our lives are not black and white. We need to stop fighting every issue in this world like it is a personal vendetta. We might be more passionate about certain issues, because of our personal experiences that drive that passion. Others have their own personal experiences that drive their want to make changes elsewhere and that is okay. If everyone stands behind one movement, how much is left unsaid?
I will say this, this world sucks. It will continue to fall apart more as each day passes on. The change we want to see needs to happen within our own hearts. We need to soften them and bring them before the Lord so He may humble us. It is naive of us to think that that government is going to evoke the change we want to see. It does not matter who is in office, because they are also flawed individuals. They fall short just as you and I do. We must not misplace our desire for something more into people who will ultimately fail. Change does not come from our president, governor, or any elected official. Most of us want to be difference-makers who also want to believe that we will leave our mark on this world where our actions and words lead to something that can bring about change. That is what is so wrong, being a difference-maker is not about me or you, but rather allowing God to use us for His purposes. Without Him, our motives and intentions are meaningless even when they are intended for good. If we want that world where kindness matters, we must remember from Whom all good things come.
